It is a dense, mound-forming, evergreen shrub bearing ovate to elliptic, leathery, glossy, dark green leaves, often flushed red in winter, with inrolled margins and spiny tips. Bright yellow flowers in late spring and early summer are followed by oval, purple fruit in early autumn.
